Abadi wages psychological war against people of Kurdistan Region
A spokesperson for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on Wednesday said it would be difficult to find a solution to the ongoing disputes between Erbil and Baghdad because of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s negative attitude.
Saadi Ahmed Pira, a spokesperson and member of the PUK’s political bureau, said it is becoming difficult to broker a deal with Abadi on the issues between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Federal Government of Iraq due to the Iraqi PM’s double standards.
“Abadi is waging a psychological war against the people of the Kurdistan Region just like other successive Iraqi governments before him,” Pira told reporters at a press conference.
He added that the Iraqi PM’s practices would not garner any good results because “the ones before him have tried these practices [unsuccessfully] as well.”
“Therefore, it would be better for Abadi to reach an agreement with the Kurdistan Region,” the PUK spokesperson affirmed.
Both Erbil and Baghdad have long-standing issues and disagreements, especially those related to energy, disputed territories, and the federal budget.
Iraq responded to the Region’s independence vote last September by carrying out collective punitive measures against Kurdistan, including an international flight ban and the use of military force to control most of the disputed territories.
Kurdish leaders have stated that the referendum was the result of ill-treatment and a violation of their rights by successive Iraqi regimes since the establishment of the country in the 1920s.
