The German embassy in Iraq has expressed concerns over Iraqi government’s recent decision to extend a flight ban previously imposed on Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports of the Kurdistan Region.

“We regret the decision to prolong the suspension of international flights to the airports in the Region Kurdistan-Iraq very much,” the embassy said in an online statement published on its official social media feeds.

“We continue to urge both the government of Iraq and the government of the Region Kurdistan-Iraq to find concrete solutions to their differences on the basis of the Iraqi constitution without further delay. Stability in the country depends on the resolution of internal conflicts,” reads the statement.

Baghdad decided earlier this week to prolong the flight ban till the end of May, after the parliamentary elections.

Several Kurdish officials and lawmakers accuse Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi of exploiting the situation and declining to solve disputes with the Kurdistan Region in hopes of winning hearts and minds of Arab nationalist voters on the election day, 12th May.
