The government of Hungary has promised to continue the military trainings, provision of arms, and medical treatment of Peshmerga forces, two senior Peshmerga commanders confirmed.

The commanders, accompanied by a delegation from the Ministry of Peshmerga, discussed military cooperation between Erbil and Budapest on Tuesday while meeting with the Hungarian deputy defense minister.

"During the meeting, we asked Hungary to continue their military training to Peshmerga forces,” Peshmerga commander Sirwan Barzani was quoted by Kurdistan 24. "They [Hungary] have given the Peshmerga weapons and ammunition in the fight against Da’esh [IS] and we have requested that they keep doing so... and they said that they will.”

As a member of the US-led Coalition battling the Islamic State (IS), Hungary has been supporting the Peshmerga since 2014. It currently has more than 165 military personnel working in advisory roles with the Peshmerga.

According to Barzani, Hungary has praised the Peshmerga forces for their role in the anti-IS efforts.

"In the meeting, we also brought up the idea that Hungary can send some of their military surgical doctors or specialists to treat the wounded Peshmerga in the military hospital that Germany has created in Erbil,” the commander revealed after highlighting Hungary’s medical support to the injured Peshmerga forces.
