Chancellor of Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) Masrour Barzani has reiterated that Christians will always be safe in the Kurdistan Region as peaceful coexistence has historic roots in the Kurdish culture.

The top Kurdish security official made the remarks on Thursday while receiving Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State.

On the coexistence between different religious and ethnic groups in the Kurdistan Region, Barzani noted that the Christians have always been seen as a key component of the society, whose protection is a human responsibility of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

The KRSC chancellor also hoped that the Christians are encouraged to stay on their ancestral land.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, on his turn, thanked the Kurdistan Region for providing a safe haven for the Christians and other religious minorities who escaped their homes because of the unrest during the past few years.

He promised continued support from Vatican to the Kurdistan Region.
